Colonoscopies. Love them? Hate them? Either way, you can’t ignore them. This is also a line from my sixty second voiceover demo. (Unrelated to colonoscopies.) You can hear that on my VO website www.ErikaDelSordo.com. Butt seriously, this week I bring to you a blog about my latest colonoscopy. (Pun intented.)
It’s more of a reminder to take care of your health. Take care of your body and it’ll take care of you for a long time. I quit drinking alcohol in 2017. It’s the best thing I could have done for my body. Now quitting sugar, that’s a whole different story. This was my second colonoscopy in three years. Due to warning signs and symptoms, I had to start these early in life.
According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States. In 2020, there have been MORE THAN 104,600 new cases of colon cancer and MORE THAN 43,000 new cases of rectal cancer. Due to modern screenings, the number of colorectal cases have decreased since the mid-80’s, but the numbers have increased in those younger than 55. Why? Because they don’t think it’s their time to get tested.
Let me help. It’s your time to get tested if you have a history of colorectal cancer in your family. Much like breast cancer, colorectal cancer should be taken just as seriously. It’s also a good time to get tested if you notice anything abnormal ‘down there.’ Most commonly, if you see any blood, get it checked out. Never ignore pain or other symptoms. My family and I lost a dear family member this year due to ‘ignored symptoms.’ Symptoms are symptoms for a reason. Please don’t ignore. There’s always help.
This past October, Today’s Talk with Erika devoted four shows to breast cancer awareness. Hear from doctors, survivors, authors and even musical guests! You can watch them here:
